Our History and Organisation

This is just a brief introduction into the history and structure of St Mary's church.

St Mary's Church is situated in the parish of Beighton. History traces  back to the village of Bectun in 1150AD. The parish boundaries have changed over the years as the population in the area grew. Today, the Ecclesiastical Parish of Beighton follows very closely the village boundaries with the recent addition of Waterthorpe and Westfield, an area now within the parish and is served by the Emmanuel Church which is a Local Ecumenical Partnership (a church supported by several denominations.)

Several parishes are brought together in a cluster and called a Deanery and supported by an Area Dean. Beighton is in the Deanery of Attercliffe which involves several churches, many local but extending to the Cathedral in the centre of Sheffield. These Deaneries in turn are gathered into the two Archdeaconries of Sheffield and Rotherham, and Doncaster.

And finally, all are gathered into a diocese headed up by a bishop. The Diocese of Sheffield extends from Sheffield, through Rotherham and Doncaster and into Goole on the east coast.
